A baby's skin is thinner and more sensitive than an adult's. It loses moisture quickly and reacts easily to heat, friction and strong products. A few gentle habits keep it soft and comfortable.
Bath time
- Two or three baths a week are enough for most babies; clean the face, neck folds and nappy area every day.
- Use lukewarm water and check it with your elbow.
- Choose mild, fragrance-free cleansers made for babies.
- Pat the skin dry, paying attention to the folds, then apply a gentle moisturiser if the skin is dry.
Preventing nappy rash
Nappy rash is common and usually mild. It happens when the skin stays in contact with moisture for too long.
- Change the nappy often and as soon as it is soiled.
- Clean with water or fragrance-free wipes, then let the skin dry in the air for a few minutes.
- Apply a thin layer of barrier cream, for example with zinc oxide, at each change.
- Make sure the nappy is the right size and not too tight.
Clothes and laundry
Dress your baby in soft cotton clothes, avoid overheating and wash new clothes before use with a mild detergent.
When to see the doctor
See your doctor if the rash does not improve within a few days, if there are blisters, cracked or bleeding skin, or if your baby has a fever or seems unwell. Ask your pharmacist before using any medicated cream on a baby.
